![]() ![]() There were slight jaggies on "Bender's Big Score" but I can't tell if they were there originally or not-there may be some observation bias going on. I encoded them using the iPod-High Rez preset.* I really haven't had too much time to mess around with audio files or pictures.* I encoded the films "Winter Light", "Through A Glass Darkly", "The Silence", and "Bender's Big Score" using the following Handbrake settings:* AppleTV presets* 2-pass encoding* Turbo First Pass* Deinterlace "Slower"Those were the most apparent settings and as Hap mentioned, deinterlacing may be redundant on some/most DVDs.On the positive side the movies converted well. Michael Penn's "Walter Reed").* The videos I ripped for my iPod look pretty decent on my AppleTV. Give Regina Spektor's "Fidelity" a shot to see how crisp and clear the picture can be. I've especially have had a lot of problems with my AppleTV dissapearing from iTMS although that seems to have fixed itself over the last several hours. Here is what I've found after a couple of hours messing around with a 2.0 version of the software:* Music videos downloaded via iTunes come in varying qualities. Jonathan beat me to the punch with an AppleTV 2.0 review: agree with a lot of what he says and his experiences mirror mine to a large extent. I basically used mp4tools patched with encoding presets shamelessly stolen from h264enc. The xVid video quality is quite disappointing on an HDTV.Those of you with a linux fileserver would probably be interested in the script I hacked together to re-encode high profile h264 videos into a main profile h264. xVid files work wonderfully with Perian installed with the notable exception that they are, well, xVid files. As such I'm stuck with Apple's h264 codec and reencoding mkv files to main profile h264 videos in an mp4 container. It technically supports high profile (the h264 profile used by most mkv files) but the AppleTV has no where near enough horsepower to decode them. This also means I can't recharge my iPod Touch via AppleTV.Perian is good for xVid files but don't install their h264 codec. I guess I could try plugging in a powered hub. Unfortunately, the USB port doesn't appear to be powered so I'm not sure I will be able to get a wireless keyboard and mouse going. Couchsurfer isn't quite ready yet - the onscreen keyboard and lack of mouse really sucks. It should be bit better once I get an smb share mounted in the right place. ![]() However, my wife enjoys the the youtube functionality and and my 2 year old son just loves the photo album screen saver.Atvfiles is nice but it's a little cumbersome to get to frontrow's home directory. The iTunes store is useless to me until Apple adds a decent amount of content for Canadians. I've patched it with ATVfiles, Couchsurfer and Perian 1.1. I got my AppleTV on thursday and am so far very pleased with it.
